Draw poker
Draw poker is a popular variety of poker where players are dealt a complete hand straight away, then discard and “draw” more cards in order to create their best five-card hand. The most ubiquitous of all Draw games is five-card draw, but there are many other variations commonly played in home games everywhere. Although it is a popular and widely known version of poker, Draw poker games are becoming less and less prevalent with the craze surrounding Texas Hold’em and other games such as Seven-Card Stud and Omaha Poker.
Five-card Draw poker can be played with anywhere between two to eight players. Initially, every player is dealt five cards face down. A round of betting then occurs, and players can discard anywhere from zero to five cards depending on the house rules. Players then receive replacement cards to complete their five-card hand. Another round of betting occurs and then showdown determines the winner. Five-card draw is typically played with blinds in casino play, but it can also be played with an ante. In the case of blinds, the player to the left of the big blind starts the betting. There are no cards dealt face-up, and no community cards in Draw games .
In addition to five-card draw, there are a number of other variations of Draw poker out there. These Draw poker games all have slightly different rules as to the game play, hand rankings, number of draws, etc. Here are a few of these games:
- Gardena Jackpots
- California Lowball
- California High/Low Split
- Badugi
- Double Draw and Triple Draw
- Q-ball
- Three Card Monte
- Acey-Deucy
- Five and Dimes
- Anaconda
Some games are high, some low, and some high-low split. Some include wild cards and some allow for between one and three draws. Some even have unique rules unseen in other poker games. With all these varieties, I am certain that you will be able to find a bunch of games to learn and always keep your home games exciting. Please feel free to do additional research on the internet for information about these varieties of Draw games .
Draw poker is simple to learn, but like all poker varieties, it is quite challenging to master. I recommend starting small and seeing lots of hands before you invest much money in any of these games. Nevertheless, do your research and get a little practice, and before long you’ll find yourself having loads of fun on the felt, and maybe even making some money.
